Match Reports:

Men’s A Report (by Tom Bowman, captain):

A big match for us tonight against an improved Cherry Burton team. Only our second time on the grass in some strong winds and dark clouds set the atmosphere for a tough evening.

The first round of matches and we went slightly different, with Paul and Jack taking on their very strong first pair, losing 8-2 despite some good rallies and incredible Paul Whurr net play! Jan and myself played their also strong second pair, and despite going 2-0 down battled through to an 8-3 victory. All eyes went to Dave and Henry versus their third pair. In what would turn out to be a recurring theme, Dave and Henry went 7-4 up and had match points in the 7-4 and 7-5 games. Despite this, the Cherry pair remained focused and clawed it back to a tiebreak. A very hard watch. Thankfully though, Dave and Henry remained cool and stormed to a 7-2 victory in the tiebreak. 2-1 to MW.

Going into the second round, Jan and I played their third pair, cruising along to another 8-3 victory. Jack and Paul played their second pair, and despite lots of close games lost 8-3. Again, all eyes to Dave and Henry. And again, Dave served for the match at 7-5. 40-15 up, even I was confident despite previous years history. Unfortunately, the Cherry pair got some good returns in play and forced another tiebreak, in which we lost 7-1. Two match points up and then losing 11 of the next 12 points. That’s tennis! 3-3 into the final round of rubbers.

I think it would be fair to say Dave and Henry were slightly demoralised after their close loss despite how well they played, and couldn’t quite pick their heads up, coming to an 8-4 loss to their second pair. Meanwhile, Jan and I played probably the best 8 games of the season so far against their first pair with Jan seemingly having both opponents on a piece of string. We changed 6-2 up, with both of us looking over to Paul and Jack’s court, who were 5-5 at this time. A solid hold from Jack followed by a break of serve meant Paul had the chance to save for the match. After what felt like a marathon game, Paul and Jack closed out an 8-5 victory.

Given the fact I knew the exact score of the game, I’m sure it’d be no surprise to say I’d slightly lost focus on our match and Jan and I had gone from a 6-2 lead to 7-5 0-40 when Jack and Paul finished. Thankfully the closing of their match allowed me to regain focus, and we came from 40-0 down to break their serve and win the match!

Overall a 5-4, 56-55 victory in our toughest match of the season so far. Fair to say I’m absolutely delighted right now. Well played to everyone tonight, a great team effort. That’s 6/6 so far and we go to Bridlington next week looking to continue our winning form!

Men’s B Report (by Matt Taylor, captain):

Back after a short international break, we travelled to Driffield to play the only team to beat us so far this season. With both teams sitting 1st and 2nd, it was going to be a close game.

The evening started well with Ian and Robbo winning 8-5, Aled and Cam battled out winning in a tie-break and myself and Laurance played some nice tennis but fell short losing 8-2.

2-1 up after the first round of games put us in a very good position unfortunately the second round didn’t go the same way Aled and Cam struggled against their best pairing losing 8-1 myself and Laurance completely forgot hiw to play tennis losing 8-2 leaving Ian and Robbo to battle out the game but coming up short losing 8-5.

4-2 down it was a big ask going in to the last round of matches Ian and Robbo played some good tennis and managed to take 2 games, myself and Laurance still not having a clue how to play tennis lost 8-1 leaving Aled and Cam to close the night winning 8-4.

A slightly frustrating night losing 6-3 but against a very consistent side with a stand-out pair. Still everything to play for in the hunt for promotion.
