Match Reports:
Men’s A (written by Tom Bowman, captain):
I’m absolutely delighted with the men’s A performance tonight, our best ever result against Beverley & ER A.
It started in a tense fashion, with Dave and Paul winning 8-3 against their 2nd pair. Jan and I managed a great win versus their first pair. Jack and Robbo last 8-7 in a tiebreak against their 3rd pair in a tense match in which a win would have set up an almost certain victory.
Into the second round Jack and Robbo put up a spirited performance against their first pair, losing 8-5. In live time this made it 2-2 overall in sets. Thankfully myself and Jan and Dave and Paul made good progress and won both our second matches comfortably.
Going into the third set of rubbers 4-2 up, the pressure was on Jan and I to get ours vs the third pair. A bit of tightness and nerves had us switching at 4-4. However, thanks to Robbo and Jack pulling out an incredible 8-5 victory versus their second pair, the nerves settled and we ultimately won 8-4, securing a 6-3 victory (Dave and Paul valiantly lost 8-5 to their 1st pair).
Overall a 6-3 and 65-50 victory. A great start to the season against the championship winning team in 12 of the last 14 seasons. We’d like to stay up in this division but beating the best team in recent years gives hope to bigger dreams. Next week away vs Cherry Burton, let’s see what happens!
Men’s B (written by Matt Taylor, captain):
Finally a little bit of sunshine and a dry night to start off the men’s tennis season. We travelled to Beverly for our first game and after being beaten twice last year we knew it would be difficult. Cam and Aled started slowly and found themselves trailing 5-2 in the first game; they soon kicked it up a gear and won the next 6 for the first point of the evening. Ian and Lee struggled against their best pairing only managing to get 2 in the first match. Myself and Laurance decided we wanted value for money and took the first game to a tie brake stumbling over the line 7 – 4 winners.
The second round of games followed a very similar format with Cam and Aled struggling against the better Beverly pair managing to take 3 games from them. Ian and Lee quickly got into the swing winning 8-4. We struggled to get going in the second game and found ourselves trailing 7 – 5 40/15 then 7 – 6 40/0 to continue our quest for good value we forced another tie break winning this one 7 – 5.
With the light disappearing quickly Cam and Aled started their third game and quickly ran out 8 – 3 winners. With the game already won we reduced the game length starting at 4 – 4. After waiting so long to play again Ian and Lee struggled to start again quickly losing 8 – 4. Myself and Laurance clicked in the short format playing some of our best tennis and quickly won the last game 8 – 5.
Final result a very close one winning 6-3 57-55.
Well played everyone next week looks to be an even tougher game vs Driffield LT A who won tonight 9-0 72-10 certainly something to look forward to!
