Winter Coaching Break
November 18, 2024
Hi all,
Thank you to everyone who has supported the coaching programme this year – whether that be junior coaching, adult coaching, holiday camps, individual lessons or school sessions, we have had a great year on the court and have made some good off court progress too!
The installation of floodlights at Market Weighton Tennis Club has enabled us to run more sessions throughout the Winter including some new adult and junior development squads as well as extra adult doubles coaching. The lights also allowed us to run our first ever Halloween event, which has given us inspiration for more events and parties going into next year.
This year has also seen us develop significantly as a coaching team. We have gone from just myself & Tom at the start of the year to finishing the year with Cheyenne, Beth, Cam & Izzy all playing a significant role in the team too. Cam, Beth & Izzy have all volunteered and assisted on Saturday mornings for almost two years now, so it has been amazing to see all three of them go on to gain their LTA Assistant qualification this year. All three have great commitment and put a great effort into what they do every Saturday morning and at tennis camps too!
Cheyenne joined us in April with her LTA Instructor qualification and a huge amount of performance tennis experience and has been a great asset to us. Going from Monday evening coaching to then add Saturday afternoon individuals before also joining us on a Thursday evening and running her own doubles coaching session, it has been great to see her becoming more involved in the coaching programme and Market Weighton Tennis Club as a whole. Anyone who has been coached by Cheyenne will have noticed the energy she brings to the court as well as her great technical expertise.
One of the most rewarding parts of my job is seeing how our tennis sessions impact and influence those who attend – all the way from those who attend their sessions and leave with a smile on their face to those who travel and compete in tennis too. There have been lots of individual and collective achievements this year which have given me great pride, some of which include:
- Hannah Lazenby being selected for Yorkshire county training for the 11&U age group – well done Hannah, you always bring a smile onto the court and put in 100% effort!
- MWLTC Mixed A Team who won the first divison for the second year running, the first time we have ever won consecutive titles. Many of the players in the team I have coached at some point, so this was a hugely rewarding achivement
- Olivier Ryszawy for playing 124 matches and having a 93-31 winning record, as well as winning six tournaments. Well done Olivier, this is very well deserved for your continuous practice and desire to improve!
- MWLTC Mens A Team for winning the first divison for the first ever time. A huge effort over the course of the season and something I am immensely proud of.
- Oscar Hobman for a great on court attitude – Oscar without fails always collects the most balls in and always listens intensely to coaches instructions and has been seeing his rewards for this, winning multiple tournaments this year starting at David Lloyd York in February on a mini red court and as recently as Hessle Tennis Club on an orange court. Well done Oscar!
- Oscar Sandilands, Ava Hall, Frances Vogels, Sam Emmerson, Scarlett Williams, Fran Benson, Olivia Vogels, Harry Wetherell, Beth Popely & Cam Hodson for all playing/entering East Yorkshire tennis tournaments and representing Market Weighton Tennis Club.
There are lots of achievements that I haven’t mentioned too!
This year also saw a change of leadership at the tennis club, but what didn’t change is the tennis clubs support of the coaching programme. Jill, much like her predecessor Judy, always gives her full support to the coaching programme and ideas that my team put forward, particularly those for juniors, so thanks to Jill and well done on your first year as chair!
For those who haven’t seen, the whole coaching programme will be taking a break for December. Sessions will run up to Saturday 30th November and will resume from Monday 6th January.
As the coaching programme heads into another year, there will be a few small changes that will be required! As great as floodlights and a higher qualified team is, these all come with extra costs. I am very proud that since I started at Market Weighton in September 2019 we haven’t increased our junior membership prices once. However we will be uplifting our prices for the first time in over five years in January. I hope this is understandable. Full details are outlined below.
Thanks again for everyone’s support and I look forward to seeing you all on court these next couple of weeks before we wrap up for the year!
Thanks,
Dave.
